There are several ways that you can help support the Christchurch Priory so that it's beauty can be preserved for generations to come.
The Friends of the Priory Church Christchurch was formed in 1964 by a small number of local church members. It has now grown to include many people from all around this country and the wider world who wish to maintain a link with this historic and beautiful church.
The Society was granted Charitable Status in 1997 and aims to assist in the repair, conservation and improvement of the fabric, to support activities to preserve and beautify the church and to make gifts to benefit it.
The Friends have recently provided new carpeting and curtains in the Lady Chapel and have paid for the re-gilding of the Tower Clock and the installation of a new sound system in the church. They have also commissioned a new stained glass window in St Stephen's Chapel.
Local members enjoy a series of interesting talks throughout the winter and spring, and meet socially three times a year besides. Members further afield are kept in touch by mailings in May and September.
You can become a friend and help us cherish this wonderful and ancient church by contacting the Membership Secretary, Friends of the Priory Church, The Parish Office, Quay Road, Christchurch, Dorset, BH23 1BU, or by printing a copy of the form and sending it with the appropriate membership fee to the Membership Secretary.
or you can download the form in either Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat format below. You can download the Adobe Acrobat Reader for free by clicking on the icon below.
As with all historic buildings there is a cost involved in maintaining its fabric. In the past few years over one million pounds has been spent restoring and conserving the Tower, North Porch, the exterior of the North Nave Aisle and North Transept, transforming it to its former glory. The work that has been completed was very necessary, coming some one hundred and fifty years after the last restoration was carried out. We are grateful to the generosity of past worshippers and parishioners whose financial gifts have enabled us to complete this work.
But more restoration work is urgently required on the exterior of the North Quire Aisle, flying buttresses, windows and Lady Chapel so that the stone work on the north elevation of the Priory may be completed.
We do not receive
any money from the Government or the Church Commissioners. It is, therefore,
the communitys responsibility to make sure that this sacred space in the
centre of our community remains a beacon of hope to our residents and all who
visit Christchurch. Our challenge is to pass on to future generations a building
that is in a better state of repair than when we received it. We have done a
great deal, but much more is needed.
The 2005 Christchurch Food & Wine Festival have kindly made us their 'Festival Charity' this year so please come and lend your support to the event thereby helping us to restore the Priory Church to her former glory.
If you wish to make a donation to the restoration fund, please contact the Priory on 01202 485804.
If you would like to make a donation to Christchurch Priory you can be certain that it will be used in the best possible way to help the church.
To
maintain the church and to ensure its future as a place of worship and pilgrimage,
it costs £600 per day. The church is not supported by state funds and
relies on the support of the local community and its
visitors for funding.
If
you are a UK taxpayer, the tax you have paid on the amount of your donation
will be reclaimed by the PCC, if you will print, and then complete, the form
and send it with your donation.
Note: The form will open in a new window. When you have
printed the form, simply close the window.
