The Crossing and Transepts

The Quire Screen, dated c.1320, is over thirty feet in length and sixteen feet in height and formed a division between the nave and the Great Quire.

The North Transept is Norman in origin but the east side has had two early English (late 13th century) chapels added, replacing the original Norman apse end. This is the site of one of the nine altars dedicated in the Priory between 1195-1221, probably the altar to St. Martin.

A modern mezzanine floor above the South Transept supports the pipe organ, restored in 1998-99, with the help of the 900th Anniversary Appeal and a grant by the Arts Council of England from the Capital Lottery Fund.
