Completed in 1150, the Nave with its massive Norman pillars, is thought to be one of the finest in England. Originally roofed at Triforium level, the final level, the Clerestory or clear storey was added in around 1230 to provide light to the body of the church. The present main roof dates back to 1350 and is mostly hidden by the plaster (stucco) ceiling, which was added in 1819. The oak timbered roof can be seen in the crossing of the transepts where it is decorated with the coats of arms of Albemarle, Flambard, Montacute, Neville, Vavasour with De Redvers & the Diocese of Winchester. |
