Built in 1486 for Sir William Berkeley, the chantry was intended as a memorial for his family. The interior of the chantry is decorated with the white and red roses of the Houses of York and Lancaster. Sir William died after The War of the Roses has ended. The beautiful Tudor Renaissance 16th century Salisbury Chantry was commissioned by Margaret, Countess of Salisbury, to be her last resting place. The chantry was designed by Torregiano, a contemporary or pupil of Michelangelo. The chantry is built of white stone (oolite) from Caen in Normandy. The beautiful fan tracery ceiling is the only Tudor fan tracery in the Priory. |
