Accessed through a door in the far left-hand corner of the church and reached via 76 steps, the Museum sits high above the Lady Chapel, its position making it unique in England.
The room was the last externally-viewed addition to the church and was likely dedicated to the Archangel St Michael by the Priory’s Augustinian Canons who remained in residence until 1539. The Disillusion proved merely the start of a series of changes in function for the surprisingly roomy Loft…
Today, the Museum’s more than 300 exhibits (including a series of purpose-made models) tell the story of the church’s development from its time as a Priory to its role as a parish church and the two staircases (with conveniently placed landings) allow for a one-way system.
The celebrated views – of the town, rivers, castle, harbour and coast beyond – are well worth the climb, as are the many free activities for children, young and old!
Staffed by volunteers from Easter to the end of October, the Museum is open Saturdays and Mondays 11am to 3.30pm (with additional openings during school holidays)
