The Miraculous Beam
The Beam is at present displayed in the ambulatory over an arch on the south side with only the end visible. The traditional story of the legend is set out on a board, with an arrow pointing to the beam.
No reference to the original location of the beam has been found in church records; it might have been one of the old apse-ended Norman Quire. Later during the 15th century rebuilding of the Quire it could have been preserved and exhibited as a sacred relic.
Alternatively there is a beam in the roof space over the south side of the Nave consisting of two parts scarfed (fitted) together and it is possible that this beam replaced the Miraculous Beam.
In either case the Beam would date from the 12th Century.
